Having been a professional actor since 1987, Bryan supplemented his income – between roles – by working in various sales, marketing and customer care jobs.

Bryan remembers, “During this time, I found my training as an actor gave me a distinct edge over my the other sales people -both in terms of my ability to put prospects at ease and in gaining commitment in order to get the sale.”

An additional thing he learned was the power of developing a ‘sales character’ in order to insulate your ‘real self’ from the negative effects of rejection that can corrode even the hardiest sales person’s self-confidence over time.

Bryan continues, “In one of my first call centre jobs, our boss used to get us to make sales calls using different accents. She did this for a bit of fun and to build confidence but I quickly realised that when I was delivering my call as ‘Cockney Bryan’ or ‘Irish Bryan’ the pressure to get the sale eased off. Developing this further – I thought, ‘what if I created the ultimate sales character and played that role?'”

The results for Bryan were dramatic and he went on to refine the ‘sales character’ creation process so that anyone could do the same.
